The imperial cities of Morocco are four ancient capitals rich in history and architectural treasures, each with its own character ... Facing the ocean, Rabat is the most careful with its numerous ramparts and fortifications protecting palaces and mausoleums. Fez is the most refined, sporting beautiful Arab-Andalusian architecture and precious craftsmanship. Meknes is more discreet, thanks to its peaceful atmosphere and its lesser-known monuments. The opposite of Marrakech, the most unbridled, with its squares teeming with life and its sumptuous buildings. Four exceptional cities that you can connect with your rental car and visit on foot, leaving from your riads.

Barely a few hours of flight, and here you are in Casablanca! This is the opportunity, before hitting the road to Rabat with your rental car, to discover the Hassan II mosque, the only one in Morocco that non-Muslims can visit. On arrival in the Moroccan capital, we take our ease in a riad with Arab-Andalusian charm. The address is ideal for setting the mood for the Morocco of yesteryear… Rabat has marvelous dynastic vestiges: its Oudayas kasbah, ocher, blue and white, its imposing Chellah necropolis, its emblematic Hassan tower … There is plenty to keep you busy for several hours, still allowing yourself a break at the Moorish café. This institution, located in the heart of the kasbah, is the perfect setting to sip a mint tea.

Before joining Fez, review your Moroccan history. Mausoleum decorated with fountains and zelliges, monumental doors and emerald minaret: no doubt, Meknes is an imperial city! Often forgotten by tourists, although registered with UNESCO, it does not lack charm or authenticity. Further north, we go back even further in time amidst the Roman ruins and mosaics set in the bucolic setting of Volubilis. Fez is the third imperial city of your trip and perhaps the prettiest. It takes two full days to discover the best of the city and its medina, one of the largest and oldest in the Maghreb. In its maze of alleys hide mosques, princely gardens and ancient palaces. We discover an exceptional craftsmanship, with a crush on its neighborhood of tanners. A bouquet of mint under your nose, to better withstand the smell, you go up on the terraces of the leatherworkers to admire the hard work of leather.

Let's go for a long day on the road ... but the mountainous landscapes that you will cross will be a superb reward! Along the Middle Atlas, you will pass through Ifrane, with its European flair, then through Azrou and its cedar forest. You can also take a lunch break at Khénifra, located halfway through. Upon arrival in Ouzoud, a traditional riad awaits you, just a few minutes' walk from the falls. Take the time to discover this natural site, one of the most beautiful in Morocco: amazing waterfalls falling from a height of 110 meters, surrounded by magots monkeys. A natural interlude that feels good ... If you want to enjoy it all day long, your riad offers the services of a mountain guide for a walk with a picnic.

Once in Marrakech, it's time to return your vehicle and take full advantage of the last imperial city of this trip. You will be charmed by its historic vestiges: the Koutoubia minaret to admire day and night, the Bahia palace with its sweet mosaics, the Ben Youssef madrassah which has crossed so many dynasties ... Marrakech is also peaceful space green such as the Menara garden… or blue, like the Majorelle garden. If the presence of a guide is not compulsory to visit the monuments of Marrakech, that of a resident is however strongly recommended to get off the beaten track! We offer you a sidecar ride with an expatriate who knows the city (almost) by heart, who will make you discover his favorite neighborhoods and give you many explanations on the customs and habits of the Marrakchis.

The currency of Morocco is the dirham (MAD), with bank notes found in the denominations of MAD 200, 100, 50 and 20 and coins issued in smaller values. While every traveller's spending habits may differ slightly, we have estimated the average daily expenses to help with budgeting for your next trip. Here you'll find the average cost for a meal or drink and advice for best practice in tipping.
Tipping is not compulsary, but is encouraged for good service in Morocco. The general rule of thumb is to tip 5~10% in restaurants or to private services such as porters. Your guide and driver would also appreciate this kind of gratitude at the end of your tour. For Taxi Drivers, typically rounding up the fare for convenience is recommended, as well as at market stalls.
Morocco is home to some of the oldest retail cultures in the world, meaning there's no shortage of souqs waiting to be explored. Haggling in Morocco is expected and welcomed. You'll notice prices are not often listed on items in the souqs, so evaluate what you're willing to pay and come prepared to bargain with the shopkeeper - it's all part of the fun!
Moroccan leather is highly unique and the centuries-old tanning techniques are still practiced across the country today. The most famous tannery is Chouara Tanner of Fez, making it the perfect place to purchase quality, hand-crafted leather goods including slippers, bags, jackets, belts and wallets. Prices for leather goods start at approximately 10 USD.
Berber rugs and carpets are traditionally the craftwork of nomadic women from the Middle Atlas region and date back to the 2nd century BC. They are made from virgin wool from the sheep and can be found in souqs across Marrakech in all shades, sizes and shapes. Rug shopowners will encourage you into their store with the offer of tea, but feel no obligation to buy. Rug prices may range from 50 to 1,000+ USD.
Used by the local Amazigh people for its healing properties, Argan Oil is immensly popular in Morocco. It is common to see women sitting on the front step of beauty shops crushing the kerns of the argan tree into paste, which is sold cosmetically for its healing properties to skin and hair. The regions surrounding Essauira and Agadir are the only places in the world where the specific tree grows. In this region you can purchase a quality 150ml bottle of the oil for approximately 20 USD.
