Itinerary

- 15 Days Tour From Casablanca To Marrakech Via Merzouga

Day 1 Day 1 : CASABLANCA - RABAT

It is in the mythical city of Casablanca that you will land. After picking up your rental vehicle from the airport, you can begin your journey with the discovery of the superb Hassan II Mosque, the only mosque that non-Muslims are allowed to visit in the country. Posed at the edge of the water, it is very pretty! We then embark on the Moroccan roads, direction Rabat. It will take half a day to discover the capital and more particularly the Oudayas kasbah, with its blue and white alleys, its ramparts and its cannons pointed towards the ocean, as well as the Mohamed V mausoleum, the Hassan tower or even the necropolis of Chellah.

D 2/4 Days 2 to 4 : FES

On the way to Fez, a stop is made in Meknes, a city "with 100 minarets" less known than its big imperial sister and therefore more confidential. As soon as you pass one of its superb monumental doors, you will fall in love with its medina… You have no less than two full days to discover the multiple facets of Fez, one of the oldest medinas in the world, with more than 300 hectares of interwoven alleys. There are those who love getting lost ... and those who prefer to follow in the footsteps of a private guide to find their way. If you choose a guided tour, you will go to the tanning district, in the old market of Rsif, on the Place Seffarine ... Historical, Fez is also artistic and gastronomic. Treat yourself and visit museums and art galleries, stroll through Andalusian gardens, succumb to delicacies such as pigeon pastilla, orange salad, milk tortilla ... A cultural feast! Without forgetting strolls and haggling sessions in the souks to bring back beautiful memories of Fassi crafts.

Day 5 Day 5 : MERZOUGA

A long day on the road awaits you, but what a journey ... Between cedar forests, peaceful lakes and mountain peaks, the landscapes crossed will be superb. You can take a lunch break in Midelt, at the junction point between the Middle and the High Atlas, and stop at the beautiful Ziz gorges. By camel or simply on foot: it's up to you to see how you want to explore the dunes of Merzouga! The desert offers a different face every hour of the day. It becomes raw and blinding when the sun is at its zenith, soft and golden brown at dusk, mysterious and sparkling under the Milky Way.

Day 6 Day 6 : TINEJDAD

You will take the road through the large palm grove of Jorf, then arrive in the village of El Khorbat. This old ksar has been superbly restored and life has resumed its course: there is even a guest house, in which you will have the honor of staying. On site, you can explore the surroundings on foot or by bike, or visit the charming Oasis Museum. The latter is not very large, but very well explained and essential to understand the culture of the region.

Day 7 Day 7 : SKOURA

It's time to head to the center of the country, passing through Tineghir, perched at an altitude of 1,350 meters. The High Atlas is yours! The Todra gorges will reveal arid rocky masses, while the Dadès gorges, a little north of Boumalne-Dadès, will be narrower and more verdant. You will then take the road of a Thousand Kasbahs, lined with century-old castles, to Skoura and its palm grove. In Skoura, which says palm grove says palm trees, but also pomegranates, date palms and even small adobe kasbahs. A real labyrinth of greenery in the middle of the desert, a "miracle" of life made possible by the wadi Skoura.

Day 8 Day 8 : ZAGORA

The journey continues towards the caravan city of Zagora, via Ouarzazate and the Drâa valley, along palm groves and ocher ksour. If you have time, you can go to Tamegroute to discover its Koranic library and its beautiful green pottery, sold in the underground kasbah. You will put your suitcases in a guest house in Zagora, an oasis at the gates of the desert. You can hike in the surrounding valley, or simply relax in the shaded swimming pool ...

On the way to Ouarzazate! We advise you to leave early to take advantage of the beautiful morning light on the oases and to discover Ouarzazate at your own pace. The city and its surroundings will particularly appeal to lovers of beautiful stones. The Taourirt Kasbah resembles a sand castle, while the Aït Ben Haddou kasbah is a superb city built on the hillside, registered with UNESCO. The latter has served as the setting for many film shoots, and we can easily understand why!

Day 10 Day 10: TAROUDANT

To get to Taroudant, you enter the heart of the Anti-Atlas, much more desert than the last regions you have crossed. On the road, you can stop at Taliouine, the capital of saffron: an ideal stopover to discover and buy this precious spice. Taroudant will mark your entry into the rich plain of Souss, with its numerous argan plantations. With its orange hues and crenellated ramparts, it has well deserved its nickname of "little Marrakech"! We love to shop early in our souk, which is cheaper than the one in the Red City and specializes in Berber crafts, especially silver jewelry.

Day 11 Day 11: ESSAOUIRA

By joining Essaouira by the coast, you will breathe the sea air and savor the landscapes of the coast, between sandy beaches and rocky coasts. What a change in climate! Ancient Mogador is certainly one of the most cosmopolitan cities in Morocco. It feels like the crossroads of Brittany, Portugal and the East, with its harbor populated by seagulls, its lively souks, its sqala and its ramparts. Definitely, we have a crush on this marine city where life is good ...

D 12/15 Days 12 to 15: MARRAKECH

Arrived in Marrakech, no need for his vehicle. The capital is easily visited on foot, most of the attractions being located in or around the medina. Your riad will be located in the heart of the latter while staying away from its hustle and bustle. You will have two days to explore the last leg of your journey, not the least. A first day can be devoted to cultural visits: the precious Ben Youssef madrassah, the museum of Moroccan art Dar Si-Said, the superb Bahia palace ... Without forgetting the gardens and minaret of Koutoubia, the Majorelle garden ... there is so much to see! For your second day, take the time to stroll around the city, make your last purchases in the souks or treat yourself to a traditional hammam with scrub and massage. At the end of the day, we like to sip a mint tea on the Jemaa el-Fna square and observe the comings and goings of the Marrakchis.

Atmosphere, atmosphere!

As a preamble to your long journey, watch Morocco seen from the sky, a documentary produced by the famous photographer Yann Arthus-Bertrand and whose comments were written by the journalist Ali Baddou. Splendid images seen from the sky, where we find all the landscapes you will cross: the imperial cities, the Atlantic coast, the Atlas mountains ... but from a unique point of view!

Tipping

Tipping is not compulsary, but is encouraged for good service in Morocco. The general rule of thumb is to tip 5~10% in restaurants or to private services such as porters. Morocco is home to some of the oldest retail cultures in the world, meaning there's no shortage of souqs waiting to be explored. Haggling in Morocco is expected and welcomed. You'll notice prices are not often listed on items in the souqs, so evaluate what you're willing to pay and come prepared to bargain with the shopkeeper - it's all part of the fun!

Leather Goods
Fez

Moroccan leather is highly unique and the centuries-old tanning techniques are still practiced across the country today. The most famous tannery is Chouara Tanner of Fez, making it the perfect place to purchase quality, hand-crafted leather goods including slippers, bags, jackets, belts and wallets. Prices for leather goods start at approximately 10 USD.

Berber Rugs
Countrywide

Berber rugs and carpets are traditionally the craftwork of nomadic women from the Middle Atlas region and date back to the 2nd century BC. They are made from virgin wool from the sheep and can be found in souqs across Marrakech in all shades, sizes and shapes. Rug shopowners will encourage you into their store with the offer of tea, but feel no obligation to buy. Rug prices may range from 50 to 1,000+ USD.

Argan Oil
Essauoira & Agadir

Used by the local Amazigh people for its healing properties, Argan Oil is immensly popular in Morocco. It is common to see women sitting on the front step of beauty shops crushing the kerns of the argan tree into paste, which is sold cosmetically for its healing properties to skin and hair. The regions surrounding Essauira and Agadir are the only places in the world where the specific tree grows. In this region you can purchase a quality 150ml bottle of the oil for approximately 20 USD.
